There are so many quality business card designs and so many terrible ones! I was on a networking night and I was handed a business card that was printed on a bright white background with a name sprawled in big, black letters across the middle with a rough description of his job title. Business card printing is not hard to find so utilise the system. The only thing he got right was that his telephone number was on there as there was no personal email address, website address and no business address; a very helpful card it was not!
It put me off contacting him for his services and as a writer I am always in need of a photographer contact but someone who is unorganised enough to have such and un-descript business card I did not want to work alongside, Ansel Adams or not. Quality business cards are an essential part of business.
Although there is no harm in the minimal approach, you should stand out from the crowd to avoid the fate of the bin by having a colourful background not a whitewash. His vague description of his job was so vague it could cover a variety of things. Including that he was a photographer is fine but he should have followed it up with a specific skill. If you have skills in multiple areas then get multiple cards so they don’t look too vague or too busy. If money is a concern then hunt around for cheap business cards.
I wasn’t so much interested in his name as what he did so his name splashed across the front was not as appealing as what he had to offer me. The generic ISP email address was also costly as with no website or no professional email, he simply came across as someone who liked photography rather than specialised in it.
